Heritage Park

Heritage Park replaces parking spaces with new public space for Salem, Indiana. The project features seating and gardens along an asphalt mural inspired by the regional folk art tradition of barn quilting. The asphalt mural also creates a pedestrian link between the town’s Central Square and the John Hay Center. A new mural by Rafael Blanco that honors significant women in Salem’s history serves as a colorful backdrop. Funding was provided by grants from Regional Opportunity Initiatives, as well as IU’s Center for Rural Engagement and ServeDesign Center. Key stakeholders included the Washington County Community Foundation, City of Salem, Washington County’s Historical Society, Chamber of Commerce, and Board of Tourism. Construction by Tovey Perry Co. Photos by Tony Vasquez, Jeni Waters, and Travis Perry.
